So recently I set up an instagram page. I was literally sitting on the bus and drove by a bit of street art which I had to take a photo of. Then I had a random thought, ‘how many pictures like this do I have?’ The answer was A LOT. Like hundreds from years back in different countries and stages of my life/ my then trends which I was obsessed with. The name, @TheArtWeMiss just came to me, maybe partially because it was the art I had missed for years but unconsciously collated, or because it’s street art, art we walk by everyday.
The rest was history.
No no lol, although it does start with a good concept. Something which is simple, unique, and easy to remember. Through my new job I had picked up a range of graphic design skills. But that’s not so important, what is is content, strategy, and engagement:
Content: It’s good to have some consistency in terms of the types of content you are putting up so that people know what to expect from you. When they know what to expect from you, those that are genuinely interested will engage. Another visually appealing method is to structure your posts so that it follows a particular pattern. Apps such as Planoly are particularly good for planning ahead.
Strategy: For instagram, hashtags are pretty much everything when it comes to reaching a wide audience. The best piece I got was doing hashtag research and not going for the super high following (e.g. #London: 13.7m vs #LifeOfALondoner: 919). This way you are way more likely to appear in the ‘top posts’ section compared to getting lost in an ocean of content. A good way to start finding these more niche hashtags is to see what other accounts are hashtagging and clicking on them to see what related hashtags are. When you have a list, check out what the translation is in different languages and then search those words in instagram to see whether people are using those tags also.
Engagement: Follow hashtags so that you can see recent and well performing posts related to your topics of interest. This won’t only give you content ideas, but also give you access to communities in which you can engage with others. Social media is social which means that the algorithms will favour your page more if you are liking, commenting, and reacting to other people’s content. It will also make your profile familiar to others in that community so that when you pop up in their notification section, or see your post on their TL, they will be way more likely to engage.
